Chemically identical to naturally occurring diamonds (pure carbon atoms arranged in a crystal structure), lab-grown diamonds are created under controlled laboratory conditions. Lab-grown diamonds have the same properties as natural diamonds, and can only be identified via microscopic minor differences in crystal structure and composition. Lab-grown diamonds are also known as a synthetic diamond, artificial diamond, engineered diamond, cultured diamond, cultivated diamond.
