A semi-precious crystal gemstone from the quartz family. In hue, the stones vary in colour from light violet to deep purple. In terms of grading, the carat weight of amethyst is less prized than the colour, as the stones are readily available. Amethysts in jewellery can be faceted, cut into cabochons or engraved.
