From the Latin, rubens, meaning red, ruby is one of the cardinal gemstones. Defined as a corundum (as are sapphires), made from aluminium oxide, rubies acquire their red colour from a trace of chromium. Rubies are graded in a similar way to diamonds, according to the 4Cs.
