Also known as lignite, jet is a mineraloid gemstone that forms over millions of years when decaying wood is subjected to extreme pressure within the earth’s crust. It is inky black and a precursor to coal. It was a popular stone for mourning jewellery during the 19th century after Queen Victoria wore jet jewellery to mourn her husband, Prince Albert.
