Similar in shape to a baguette cut, and, as the name suggested, originally designed for emerald stones, an emerald cut appears rectangular, although it has mitred (cut off) corners which make the silhouette octagonal rather than oblong. Emerald cuts traditionally featured a step-cut silhouette. Less brilliant than some cuts, due to the arrangement of the facets, clarity and colour are also more visible in emerald (and baguette) cut diamonds.
