A lustre, iridescent formation of calcium carbonate that forms within a shelled mollusk, most often a pearl oyster. Though pearls can form in many shapes, the most highly prized is smooth and spherical. Naturally formed pearls are very rare, most jewellery is made from farmed or cultured pearls.
