Smelted (the process by which is it separated from other metals) as far back as 4000BC, silver has been used in jewellery for centuries. Pure silver is too soft to craft into jewellery, so sterling silver is the finest quality, categorised by containing 92.5% pure silver, hence the hallmark 925.
