The age-old practice of backing a gemstone with a thin layer of metal, known as a foil, to enhance or adapt the colour and brilliance of a stone. Over the years foiling has been practiced to fraudulently alter the appearance of a stone, or make a non-precious stone appear precious, gradually the practice has become less popular than in previous centuries.
