Jewellery trends aw16 - bold earrings

Now fashion week is in full swing, we look back at the AW16 runway for this season’s key jewellery trends.

Chokers take hold

A trend so pervasive it deserves its own post, chokers are the 90s throwback that feels oh-so modern. Dion Lee layered simple bands over polo necks – Lynn Bann has similar sculptural styles – while Chanel went regal with a throat full of pearls. Anissa Kermiche’s diamond tatoo choker is our favourite take on the trend.

The return of classic pearls

Speaking of pearls, they’ve been given an edge in recent years, pierced with spikes and dangled from ear jackets – but this season saw a return to their traditional ladylike look. Karl Lagerfeld draped them over tweed twinsets in signature Chanel style, while at Miu Miu a single string peeked out from preppy shirts.

Hoop La La

Oversized hoops are in the limelight, evolved for AW16, with interconnecting links swinging from earlobes at Alexander Wang and Edun, and threaded around throats at Loewe. Get the look with Annoushka’s Hoopla range, where insects crawl across hoops in various sizes and colours. A piece from Meadowlark’s new Stratus collections or Charlotte Chesnais’s II collection will also help you nail this trend.

Shoulder dusting earrings

Yes, we love our minimal studs, but statement earrings are back. From geometric blocks at Emporio Armani to super-sized tassels at DSquared2, the bigger (and bolder) the better. Dolce & Gabbana’s pom-pom floral earrings score maximum points for exuberance, with Shourouk’s African-inspired beaded designs coming in close second. For a more refined take, look to Susan Caplan’s Adira earrings: a cascade of sophisticated satin gold.

Ear cuffs reign supreme

Hedi Slimane’s final collection for Saint Laurent might have been an ode to 1980s couture, but he didn’t abandon his inner rebel altogether. Models’ slicked back hair let oversized ear cuffs shine – look to Ryan Storer for similar Swarovski crystal extravaganzas. Meanwhile, multiple upper-ear piercings were paired with moody lips at Dior: Repossi’s diamond Berbere ear cuff is the money-no-object choice.

To cap it all

Bejewelled flowers, charms and chains adorned bird-nest hair at Alexander McQueen; Erdem’s vintage Hollywood dresses were paired with ornamental hair clips and Rodarte accessorised with foil and fresh flora. Three’s a trend; your AW16 party look won’t be complete without hair jewels. Feeling brave? Make like Guido at Alexander McQueen and place your favourite jewels atop your head – secured with plenty of kirbys, naturally.
